The ABC of CBT – the starter exercise/handout to catch your negative automatic thoughts…

This post introduces the ABC technique of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that helps build awareness and self regulation of stress, anxiety, and depression by identifying and changing your “distorted thinking” and “self-sabotaging” behaviors. This starter exercise involves categorising your thoughts into three columns: a) the activating event or situation, b) your beliefs and thoughts, and c) the consequential feelings and behaviour. CBT teaches us to reframe with healthier rational thinking, thereby altering your feelings and behaviours. The post includes examples and PDF downloads of exercises. Continue reading
